3 ring elevator, double reins, and running martingale: is this legal at shows?
I ride my horse in a figure 8 bridle with a 3 ring elevator, one set of reins on the 3rd ring and another on the snaffle ring. I also use a running martingale on the snaffle rein. We are going to start showing in the children’s jumpers at A and AA shows, going by USEF rules is this combination legal?
I feel as though a running martingale on an elevator bit sort of defeats the purpose? If you’re putting the gag bit on, the pressure on the lips makes the horse raise its head, but the martingale counteracts that. I’ve never, ever seen that combination used.
I would seriously just switch to a Pelham. You’ll have the same effect, without the pinching on the lips. The gag bit has the same effect as the curb on a Pelham, but the chain on a Pelham can be adjusted to the horse’s preferance/need.
I’m not sure if it’s a legal combination in show jumping. I know that in hunters, both gag bits and running martingales are frowned upon. I’m not about to go and look through the rule book, but if you search google, you’ll find it. I know there are copies from 2010 back, so you won’t have an issue with that.
