Exploring Skyline Drive – Camping, Hiking, and things to do
Skyline Drive is a scenic highway 105 miles long curved through the majestic peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains through the Shenandoah National Forest in Virginia. Enjoy a slow and quiet walk in the park, experiencing beautiful views of the picturesque many sights along the road. There are plenty of opportunities to view wildlife and enjoy the fragrant and beautiful flora that decorates the mountains.
Skyline Drive offers bed and breakfast inns and other accommodations near as well as numerous camping opportunities, including backcountry camping in Shenandoah National Forest and family camps along Skyline Drive. Whether you're filling Coleman cooler chest for an afternoon picnic at one of the picnic areas along Skyline Drive, or planning a backpacking trip through more than 500 miles of trails for hiking in the Shenandoah National Forest, there are plenty of activities outdoors to enjoy along the way, not to mention the beautiful views and many attractions nearby. Horizon northern end of the unit is in Front Royal, VA, U.S. the 340 and only 500 meters above sea level. Both cars and cyclists share the curvy mountain drive, so it is important to obey the 35 mph speed limit along the avenue. Backcountry camping is allowed throughout the Forest Shenandoah National and camping permits can be obtained by mail in advance or at a ranger station after his arrival. A small entrance fee is charged for entrance to Skyline Drive and the pass is valid for seven days.
Shortly after entering the Skyline Drive from the north end, you get to the Dickey Ridge Center visitors and picnic area at MP 4.6. The visitor center offers a variety of information and exhibits nearby. The campsite for the first time at Skyline Drive, Mathews Arm, is at MP 22.1. Campers can enjoy excursions to the highest waterfall in Shenandoah National Forest or stroll through a nature trail relaxing around the campsite. Nearby, at 24.1 MP is Elkwallow Road groceries and camping and picnic area Elkwallow. The edge of the road also has with a grill that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner to be held in the picnic area or outdoor patio.
In 31.5 MP, you can exit the horizon of the unit by Rt. 211 to visit the beautiful Luray, VA in the quiet valley of Shenandoah. Luray is home to the impressive Luray Caverns where you can take a guided tour of the magnificent cave formations, including the famous singing rocks. Luray also offers a variety of bed and breakfast inns and secluded cabin rentals. A little later, in MP 32, which pass through Mary Rock Tunnel, the tunnel only at Skyline Drive. There is a lookout just after the tunnel, which offers great opportunities picture of the structure.
The Pinnacles picnic area is located at MP 36.7 on Skyline Drive and offers a quiet, pleasant place to enjoy a picnic or cook of charcoal grills available. Bathrooms are available here too.
