Why my new Crank Brothers pedals do all sorts of creaks and cracking noises during cycling?
They are models of Smarty. The noise seems come from metal to metal contact. My old shimanos were silent. Also, does anyone know what those thin plastic washers that come with them are?
I have not ridden Smarty pedals yet, but I have several pairs of egg beaters and mallets, and a set of Quattro road pedals. It is good ….. my favorite in the hands of the market down. Check it out as best I can to see what could be the cause, then, if not removed or can not understand, to a Crank Bros. call. They will hook up with a new series soon. This is a new pedal from them and China are obtained, so it may have had a bad batch or something. Sure that its system of fixing screws are tight and uniformly tight ….. many times they will "loosen" after sitting for awhile the first time to install them in the sole of the shoe is built in. It's possible you could get the noise there. To see if any noise from the overlays stamped steel the pedal. Put the body of great pressure on the pedal to arm / hand and turn the pedal ….. Do I have a squeak coming from the shaft? I do not know about Smarty but every other pedal of them has a nylon bushing on the inside and sealed bearings on the outboard. Maybe that hub is broken? Force up and down and pull him back and forth ….. see if noise is telling you that it is the pedal and not the shoe or cleat. If it appears that the creek, spray a little silicone in the shoe and foot and ride a bit ….. if fixed, and then the pedal is squeaking / cleat / shoe friction and probably disappear with little mileage. Just for fun, control the torque on the pedals, crank pins, and bottom bracket cups …… sometimes creaks transfer through the metal and make it look like they are coming from other place. If that does not, call them and set them up. They are a great company ….. stand behind their products 110% O, plastic shims placed under attachment system to off-site space for interference problems. Do not always use them, but I have a friend with a Cannondale shoes they needed, even after turning off the eraser to remove the pedal.
