Horse gel pad?
I’m thinking of getting a gel pad for my young horse. Would this make her more comforatble and does it goes on top or under the saddle pad?
Gel pads work just like regular saddle pads in that they go under the saddle. You do not need an extra pad. Now, you asked if the gel pad would make your horse more comfortable. Though many companies hype up the expensive gel pad, they are nothing special. In fact, concerns are often expressed with the fact that many gel pads prevent the horse’s skin from breathing. Realistically, the gel pad can be equated to inserts for running shoes; though they feel nice, they are most likely unnecessary. Woven saddle pads or pads with heavy felt centers with shearling fleece bottom will offer the desired comfort and support, presuming the saddle fits correctly. I would suggest that before you fork over the money for a gel pad, you first make sure your saddle properly fits your horse. If you do buy a gel pad, just be certain that the pad allows the passage of air so your horse does not become overheated!
