What does an “ejector” do on a pump action shot gun?
If an ejector was broken, what would happen? Is there any way a spent shell casing could eject itself?
But just because a shot gun has an ejector, you still need to “pump it” to expel the casing, right? no?
Thanks so much for the answers but I still need help trying to understand if you need to manually pump a shot gun to expel the shell? Even if a shot gun has an ejector, that doesn’t mean it is automatically ejecting the shell, right? It still requires a manual pumping action?

As someone has already pointed-out, there is an EXTRACTOR on the bolt of most pump-action shotguns. This pulls the shell out of the chamber of the barrel in a rearward direction. There is also an EJECTOR on the inside of the frame of the shotgun. It is usually a piece of spring steel that comes into contact with the rear of the shotshell and pushes the shell toward the ejection port of the gun, thus ejecting the shotgun shell from the frame of the shotgun.
If your ejector were to break, it would mean that the shells would be pulled from the chamber area, and then simply sit, held in place by the extractor, on the bolt face. This would result in a jam, since the carrier would attempt to raise the next round to align with the bolt face, but instead, would bump upward and contact the shotshell that is still held in place on the extractor/bolt face.
