Safety Flashlight
Want to leave my lease for safety reasons.

I have a situation that I need help with. I moved into an appartment and it was fine. Now 6 months late the area has gotten terrible. Last night I called the police for the 2nd time in 2 weeks. I was threatened by one of the neighbors, because I was using a flashlight to walk my dog. He apparently said I looked like a cop. The police confronted the moron, and I have been asked to file charges if I want. I am filing charges but that is not my problem. I still have 6 months on the lease and these people know I have called the cops twice. I am in fear for my safety and possibly my life. I have notified my landlord about the police reports and now the open caee. I want to leave the place NOW. How should I go about this? Do I risk my credit and tell the landlord I am leaving and to keep the deposit and just go? Or do I plead for them to work out a deal? What are my legal rights and or obligations if I choose to leave with the pretext of the police cases.

I have been in this EXACT situation before. What I did was, I called the bar association for the state I was living in at the time. You can get the number by dialing 411 and asked to have a lawyer that would work for low income that specializes in tenancy. I went to see the lawyer and he wrote a letter to the landlord of the building I was living in. It basically said that at the time my tenancy took place the landlord had not been forthcoming with me about the safety of the area I was to be living in. The landlord let me out of the lease at the end of that month. No penalties, no loss of deposit, no scar on my credit. There are ways around it especially if it is an unsafe neighborhood and you feel legitimately unsafe. The police reports will help back up your case a lot. Good luck and stay safe.
